Sempiterno takes its title from the Italian word for something that is everlasting or perpetual. The piece explores this idea through the interaction of repeating ostinati and long, sustained musical lines.

The ostinati create a continuous, cyclical motion, while the longer lines unfold gradually above and through them. As these two types of material intersect, the music seems to exist in a state of constant movement and continuity, with patterns returning while other elements stretch beyond them.
